OUR READ
Ten years between Grand Theft Autos.
Rockstar opened Trailer 1 with a woman in cuffs — and that wasn’t a marketing choice, that was a structural one. Lucia is the first woman to lead a GTA, full stop, and putting her in a custodial opening pulls the series back to the underdog energy that made San Andreas the template. CJ landed in the back of a cop car in 2004; Lucia is in cuffs in 2023; the parallel is intentional. The Bonnie & Clyde framing with Jason will define the discourse for the next three years, but the more interesting move is the setting. Vice City was always the only Rockstar map that felt like a place rather than a level, and they’ve expanded it into the full state of Leonida — Florida in extremity, the way San Andreas was California in extremity. Tom Petty’s “Love Is a Long Road” isn’t background music, it’s a thesis statement: a song about a bad woman who’s worth it, which is exactly the relationship the trailer is selling. The “Coming 2025” card has since shifted to November 2026, but Rockstar dates slip once and then hold. Trailer 2 and 3 are the campaign. Trailer 1 was the announcement.
